If there is a disparity between the demands placed on us and our resources to meet those demands, we experience stress. The level and degree of stress a person may experience is heavily influenced by their attitude towards a given situation. Consequently, an extremely stressful event for one person may be a minor issue in the life of another.
You may feel pressed to do something and fearful of failing. The more critical the outcome, the more stressed you will feel. Plus, external situations (too much work, challenging behavioural issues with children) and internal triggers can cause stress (how you think about external situations). Stress management techniques provide strategies for coping with life’s inevitable stressful events.
However, some stress is not always a bad thing. In fact, some people flourish on it and even require it to get things done. However, when “stress” is used clinically, it refers to a situation that causes a person distress and discomfort and can lead to other mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Essentially, stress has many effects on us, including emotional, cognitive, and behavioural changes. How you respond to stress is influenced by your attitude, personality, and way of life.
Being proactive in stress management is the key to maintaining a healthy stress balance. For instance, it will help if you exercise regularly and avoid situations that put you in highly conflicted states that are distressing (although ignoring a problem is not the best way to reduce stress). Relax and find the time each day to spend with people who make you feel good about yourself, eat well, have a healthy sleep routine, and have a well-balanced, fun-filled life.
